Nonprofits by the Numbers and Employment Reports

Maryland Nonprofits is proud to bring you the 2008 edition of Nonprofits by the Numbers. The newly updated version shows some encouraging and exciting trends in the nonprofit sector. These statistics show that Maryland’s nonprofit sector is not only growing in numbers, but budget sizes are growing as well. Maryland’s nonprofit sector is comprised of over 26,000 organizations and employs 243,043 workers. This translates to roughly 9.5% of the entire state’s workforce and 8.4% of Maryland’s payroll.

It is easy to count the number of nonprofits and the number of people these nonprofits employ. It is far harder to measure the impact of nonprofits on a county’s social vitality, quality of life, and opportunity for civic involvement. Nonprofits provide extensive services to a county’s residents, from child care and employment and training programs, to education, arts, recreation, religious, and cultural activities, to housing and health care services.
