Employee Assistance Program

Maryland Nonprofits introduced a new EAP service provider effective July 1, 2010.  Due to internal changes at Family and Children's Services, they are no longer able to serve our membership statewide.

Our new provider will be Business Health Services, a Workplace Wellness and Behavioral Risk Management Provider.  Business Health Services hosted two webinars to introduce their EAP service to Maryland Nonprofits members.  If you weren't able to attend, you can view the PowerPoint Presentation here. For more information about BHS, visit their website.   Please contact Alli Albert for login information at 443.438.2346.

Business Health Services has established a reputation for delivering outstanding assistance for persons coping with life changes, stress, family matters, substance abuse concerns, and work-life balance issues for more than a quarter century.  We are confident our members and their families will appreciate some of the new benefits that Business Services can offer such as:

  • unlimited 24/7 telephone consultation with Care Coordinators;

  • up to four face-to-face visits with a licensed clinician through its nationwide Affiliate network;

  • nationwide Affiliate network so dependants living outside of the region may seek services;

  • legal & financial consultation;

  • screened childcare and eldercare referrals;

  • and an online web resource with 500,000 articles, videos and resources.

BHS focuses on problem resolution within the EAP model and will identify community resources and workplace benefit resources whenever the presenting concerns require assistance outside the auspices of the EAP.

The new program cost is based on all of the program components outlined above and covers all employees, their household members and dependents.   Pricing for the new service is as follows:

Q: In general, what is the purpose of an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)?

A: Organizations want to keep their employees satisfied and productive. Sometimes employees have problems that result in declining performance. If the problem is job-related, it can usually be solved by additional training or a workload adjustment. When the problem is caused by a personal situation, most supervisors are not equipped to help the troubled employee. An EAP gives the employee access to counselors qualified to assist with a variety of problems including alcohol/drugs, bereavement, emotional distress, marital relations, legal concerns, depression, family conflicts, stress, and financial concerns.

Q: What specifically does the Maryland Nonprofits EAP provide?

A: Each employee and their household members are allowed up to four face-to-face visits per identified problem, at no cost, for assessment, referral and short-term counseling.  The service is available 24 hours daily by telephone for questions, requests for service, and urgent situations by the EAP Care Coordination team.

When professional help beyond the scope of the EAP services is necessary for an employee or household member, the EAP Care Coordination team will refer the person to an affordable provider associated with the employee's health insurance covering part or all of the expense of that referral when appropriate and/or to community resources. The Care Coordination Team will follow-up on all referrals and monitor continuing care to ensure that the issue is resolved.

The EAP also provides employees and their household members with access to brief legal consultation, short-term financial counseling, childcare referrals, and eldercare referrals as part of the work-life EAP benefits.

The EAP also provides a Maryland Nonprofits specific website that reviews the EAP benefits and includes a library of almost 500,000 resources (articles, videos. etc.) that address a wide variety of topics related to emotional well-being, family life, and physical health and wellness.

Q: Why should a nonprofit organization have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)?

A: An EAP can positively affect productivity, absenteeism, turnover, and employee morale. An EAP can show employees that the organization cares about them. An EAP can give employees peace of mind by knowing that professional and confidential help is available to them and their families.  An EAP can fulfill federal and state grant requirements for a drug-free workplace policy.   An EAP is an important resource for supervisors and managers as noted by the next question.

Q: What specific resources for supervisors are available?

A: Supervisors may contact EAP management consultants to discuss whether a referral to the EAP would be helpful to address an employee performance problem.  These consultants have extensive experience coaching supervisors with informal or formal referrals to the EAP, recommendations for communicating concerns about work performance challenges, as well as providing training program recommendations when necessary.

Q: My organization only has a couple of employees, can we take advantage of this service?

A: This program is available to organizations with only one employee and to those with hundreds of employees.

Q: Are part-time employees eligible?

A: Individual organizations may decide whether to offer the EAP to part-time staff.

Q: Do all eligible employees have to be covered?

A: Yes. Unlike health insurance where people may decline coverage because they are covered by a spouse, all eligible employees must be covered by the service.

Q: My organization is located in Salisbury. Can my employees and their family members use the service?

A: Yes, employees and their family members will be seen at an office near their home or where they work.   The EAP is headquartered in Baltimore so there is an extensive network of service providers throughout all parts of Maryland, however, household members who may live out of state due to work or educational reasons may still access the EAP for services.  The Maryland Nonprofits EAP has been providing services for almost three decades through its network of providers located in all 50 US States and the District of Columbia.

Q: How will the organization be billed for the EAP services?

A: Your organization will be billed monthly. We require that your organization commit to the service for a minimum of twelve months. If you currently purchase any services from the Maryland Nonprofits Employee Benefit Trust, the EAP will show as an additional column on the monthly bill.

Q: My organization currently has an EAP with Family and Children's, can we switch to the Maryland Nonprofits plan?

A: Yes, your organization can switch and may save money by doing so.   There are also fee-for-service training programs and crisis counseling services available through the EAP.  You should carefully review your current arrangement and compare with the Maryland Nonprofits-sponsored EAP.

Q: In addition, to the employee assessment, referral, and consultation, what other services will my organization receive?

A: Your organization will receive brochures and wallet cards for your employees. Telephone consultation for implementation will be at no cost.
