2008 marks the 10th year of Maryland Nonprofits’ Standards for Excellence® Program, a nationally recognized project originated by Maryland Nonprofits in 1998. The Standards for Excellence® promotes a first of its kind, comprehensive system for improving organizational management in the nonprofit sector. The code’s eight guiding principles cover 56 individual benchmark standards, which nonprofit staffs and board-members can use to educate themselves, evaluate their present efforts, implement change, and, if they are ready, apply to become certified and earn the Seal of Excellence through a rigorous process of peer review – an accreditation component that only 200 organizations have accomplished across the country.

Conference Speakers:

Morning Plenary -
Kojo Nnamdi

Host of The Kojo Nnamdi Show on WAMU 88.5, Nnamdi, a native of Guyana, lends a global perspective to front page headlines and explores emerging stories before they are news. “Maybe the best interviewer in town,” according to The Washington Post, Kojo’s inviting on-air style encourages guests and callers to discover new points of view, embrace controversy and spark new ideas. The Kojo Nnamdi Show airs on WAMU weekdays, noon to 2 pm.

Luncheon Keynote
- Michael Edwards

Former director of the Ford Foundation’s Governance and Civil Society Unit in New York, Edwards has just written another widely acclaimed book, Just Another Emperor? The Myths and Realities of Philanthrocapitalism. Business involvement in philanthropy is increasing day by day, but is it a blessing, a curse, or somewhere in between? Just Another Emperor? is the first book to take a comprehensive and critical look at this vital new phenomenon. Whatever position you take, this will be one of the most important debates of the next 10 years.
