Develop as a Leader

Leaders aren’t just at the top! It is important to develop and invest in leaders at all levels of your organization. A pipeline of developing leaders will ensure sustainability and stability in your organization while reducing the costs of employee (and volunteer!) turnover. By investing in your people, you are creating a skilled team that is increasingly likely to be dedicated to your organization. Developing as a nonprofit leader takes time, experience, coaching, professional development, and opportunities to grow and explore. Leadership development ranges from building self-awareness, to leaning on a network of peers and mentors, to formal learning experiences, to opportunities to present knowledge, to volunteering and taking special assignments to expand your wheelhouse.

We’ve organized the resources we offer to help you develop as a leader based on wherever you fall in your nonprofit lifecycle.

Leaders of start-up organizations tend to be visionaries with expertise in the mission-focus of their organization. You should prioritize building shared leadership and ownership of your mission with your team as you develop your board and volunteers. It’s critical to study the “business” of running a nonprofit organization, and to balance the mission-focus with the organizational-building energy needed to structure the organization properly.

The Standards for Excellence Code provides resources on board, staff, and volunteer leadership: "Nonprofits depend upon effective leadership to successfully enact their missions and programs. Effective leadership consists of a partnership between the board and management, each of which plays an essential role. Understanding and negotiating these shared and complex elements of leadership is essential to the organization’s success." See the Code's leadership benchmarks.

The Standards for Excellence Code says "Nonprofits should have executive leadership which carries out the day-to-day operations of the organization, ensures financial and organizational sustainability, and provides adequate information to the board of directors. An organization’s human resource policies should address both paid employees and volunteers and should be fair, establish clear expectations, and provide meaningful and effective performance evaluation." Leaders of organizations in decline/crisis fall into two main categories: those who were there as the decline or crisis unfolded, and those who are new and are facing a need for turn-around. For leaders who have history with the organization, it is critical to be compassionate with yourself, but also be willing to face your role in the decline/crisis and work on self-change as much as organizational change. For leaders brought in from the outside to engineer a turnaround, being an expert at change management will be critical as you guide a rattled organization to stable ground.
