Develop Mission, Strategy, and Evaluation

The Board of Directors is responsible for assuring that a nonprofit is making progress toward achieving its mission of service to the community. The board must organize itself to be efficient and effective, assuring that the organization operates in an ethical, forthright, and law-abiding manner. The board of directors is responsible for assuring adequate human and financial resources, hiring and supervising the chief executive, and actively monitoring and evaluating the organization’s financial and programmatic performance. To do this well, nonprofit board members must understand the full scope of their responsibilities and roles as well as the relationship between the board and the professional staff and volunteers.

Your start-up nonprofit should have a board-approved mission statement that clearly defines the purpose of your organization. Strategic goals at this stage should be simple and straight-forward, and include 1-3 programmatic goals (e.g. mission fulfillment) and 1-2 organizational development goals (e.g. raise money, build a board).

You may find yourself developing your strategy as you write grant proposals, or writing goals to fit activities you are already doing. The need for a clear strategic direction and a way to evaluate your impact will arise repeatedly if you don’t stop for a moment, set clear goals and strategies, and consider how to evaluate your impact.

When an organization is in the midst of a decline or crisis, it may not be productive or the right timing to engage in in-depth strategic planning and program evaluation activities. However, it is a time to utilize your mission statement, stated organizational purposes, and existing strategic plan (if you have one) to help you prioritize how to address the decline/crisis at hand. Sustainability planning may be a more relevant framework at this stage.
