COMPASS PRO BONO

OVERVIEW

Since 2001, Compass has built stronger communities by building stronger nonprofits. Compass recruits business professionals who volunteer their time as consultants on teams that build the capacity of local nonprofits. Compass provides the following pro bono consulting services, free of charge to the nonprofits: Board Development, Funding Strategies, Strategic Alignment, Strategic Planning, Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations, and Strategic Marketing.

TARGET AUDIENCE

For consulting clients: E.D.s and Board Members of nonprofit organizations with 501(c)3 status that benefit local communities.

For volunteers: MBAs graduates from top business schools, lawyers, consultants, and other business professionals.

GET INVOLVED

Need a Consultant? Compass accepts applications from nonprofit organizations that have a mission to benefit the Greater Washington community. Client applications open in April each year, with projects running from September to May. To find out specific client criteria, including minimum budget and staffing requirements, click here.

Looking to Volunteer? Compass identifies qualified volunteers for all Compass projects, with priority given to MBA graduates from top business schools, attorneys, and professionals with consulting, nonprofit or prior Compass experience. Volunteers receive mandatory trainings and access to an extensive project management toolkit to support the engagements. Volunteer applications can be found here.

KEY PROGRAMS

Consulting & Technical Assistance

  • Classic Consulting Projects run from September through May, and are available for one of the following service lines: Board Development; Funding Strategy; Strategic Alignment; Strategic Planning, Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations and Strategic Marketing. Nonprofits must select one service line in their applications, but can apply for additional service lines in subsequent years.
  • Micro Projects run from January – May. These special projects are available by invitation-only, as they are sponsored by foundations and corporations for select nonprofits.

Volunteer & Board Matching

  • Compass selects consultants to staff both Classic and Micro Projects in September and January. Applications are solicited for Team Members and Project Leaders.
  • The On Board program matches business professionals interested in a nonprofit board position with nonprofits needing qualified board members. Compass matches two cohorts of board members each year – in the fall and in the spring.
