Spur Local, formerly The Catalogue for Philanthropy is the Greater Washington region’s only locally-focused guide to giving. Since 2003, Spur Local has highlighted the best local charities (budgets under $3M), raising more just under $38M for its network of nonprofits. Each has been vetted for impact, cost effectiveness, and financial transparency by a team of more than 120 local experts.

In addition to connections to potential donors, Spur builds the capacity of its nonprofit partners through The Learning Commons, which offers educational opportunities throughout the year. The Learning Commons features trainings in development and stewardship, marketing and communications, and volunteer management. The program also offers neighborhood convenings, donor education sessions, and other collaborative opportunities.

Executive Directors and Development Staff of nonprofit organizations with 501(c)3 status and operating budget between $100,000 and $3 million.

Apply to Spur Local! Be recognized as one of the region’s “best” nonprofits by applying to Spur. Applications are solicited in the beginning of the calendar year, vetted by experts in the local nonprofit community, and notified of their status by May. In addition to training in development and stewardship, nonprofits receive support with marketing and communications — including a 145-word impact story, Spur Local’s “one of the best” seal, a personalized webpage, a feature in the print Catalogue (distributed to 30,000 individuals), and the opportunity to be featured in Washingtonian Magazine, Washington City Paper, and others.

Find Professional Development: Featured nonprofits can access The Learning Commons’ professional development workshops and trainings on best practices in development, communications, and volunteer management. Information can be found here.
