There is a purposeful and necessary distinction between the role of the Board and the role of the Staff in a nonprofit organization. On the most basic level, the Board determines the mission of the organization and governs, while the Staff works to achieve or address that mission by running the day-to-day operations.

However, we don’t always have the Staff necessary to carry out functions that typically fall within the purview of the Staff. Frequently, we turn to our most trusted and dedicated volunteers, our board members to fill in the gaps. When board members are relied on to assist with operational tasks these “working” board members need to understand and embrace the duality of their roles.
