Fundraising, Solicitation, Acceptance of Gifts, and Working With Donors – Standards for Excellence Educational Resource Packet (24)

MEMBER EXCLUSIVE RESOURCE

Your nonprofit’s solicitation and promotional materials should be accurate and truthful and should correctly identify your organization’s mission, and the intended use of the solicited funds. (Your materials should also include legally-required disclosure/disclaimer language, an example of which is included in Disclose It: A Charitable Nonprofit’s Guide to Disclosure Requirements). To ensure that all of your solicitations include the legally-required disclosure/disclaimer language, and that donations are carefully and consistently reviewed for appropriateness before acceptance, the Standards for Excellence Code calls for every nonprofit to have fundraising and resource development policies. If your nonprofit receives a gift from a donor that is deemed inappropriate or burdensome, a policy allows your nonprofit to point to a clearly defined fundraising policy when declining the gift, keeping the relationship intact. This educational packet outlines the benefits of fundraising policies, and donor relationships and privacy.

Attached at the end of this packet you will find the customizable companion documents:

  • Template for Policy on Solicitation and Acceptance of Gifts, Standards for Excellence Institute
  • A Donor Bill of Rights, reprinted with permission of Association of Fundraising Professionals.
